Does the chain count as a row?
If you need a more detailed explanation, there is a step-by-step picture guide when I explain how to crochet in the round. But the trick to counting rows of individual crochet stitches is simple. In most cases, this chain 1 does not count as a stitch. If you need help determining the right side of the fabric, I’ve written a tutorial on it and you can find it here.
To count the stitches in your colour field, look at the individual crochet pieces along the row from left to right. You’ll notice that the stitch itself looks very different from a double crochet, but counting is exactly the same.
