A simple ribbed beanie or beanie is a great knitting project for beginners. The K1, P1 ribbing is done for 6 rows and the stockinette stitch is done up to 7″, then the decline is completed in 3 rows and the hat is done. I just finished the hat while I was in isolation with COVID 19 😦 That wasn’t fun, but learning how to knit the hat was. The pattern pretty clearly states that you start declining when the hat measures 7″.
You will see that the yarn is at the back when knitting, while the yarn is in the front when you work a left stitch.
Can you knit a hat on straight needles?
Knitting the hat flat and then stitching the top and back is perfect if you are not ready to knit in the round yet. This easy alternative to working with double pointed or circular needles is to knit the hat flat and then sew it up. Most beginners learn how to knit on straight needles, and even advanced knitters love its simple simplicity. I like simple items that come together quickly and that I can easily give away as soon as they’re done.
A round knitted hat is usually cast at the brim edge, joined together, and then worked round to the tip of the hat, forming the crown.
